We’ve seen three clips from the life of Joe in Lars von Trier‘s Nymphomaniac, tracking a train ride, a workplace encounter with none other than Shia LaBeouf and the result of an act of adultery. Today, however, we shift gears with the fourth clip from the film, which completes a look at the first half of this two-part erotic journey.
Titled Delirium, von Trier heads into black-and-white (as promised) for this section, which introduces us to Christian Slater, father of Charlotte Gainsbourg‘s main character. While the clip peers on from afar, as Stellan Skarsgard recites Edgar Allan Poe‘s “The Fall Of The House Of Usher,” the new above still reveals a sexual encounter (or delusion?) near the end of his life. Check out the footage below, along with a brief synopsis of this section.
Delirium:
Confusion. Delusion. Hallucination. The nymphomaniac’s father dies.
Synopsis:
The film is a wild and poetic story of a woman’s erotic journey from birth to the age of 50 as told by the main character, the self-diagnosed nymphomaniac, Joe (Gainsbourg). On a cold winter’s evening the old, charming bachelor, Seligman (Skarsgård), finds Joe beaten up in an alley. He brings her home to his flat where he cares for her wounds while asking her about her life. He listens intently as Joe over the next 8 chapters recounts the lushly branched-out and multi-faceted story of her life, rich in associations and interjecting incidents.
Also starring Jamie Bell, Stacy Martin, Uma Thurman, Willem Dafoe, Connie Nielsen, Udo Kier, and Jean-Marc Barr, Nymphomaniac premieres in Denmark at the end of the year, before a 2014 release and a possible stop at Cannes for the hardcore version.
