Japanese television shows are known for crazy cultural antics, very unusual games and a flavor of humor that can only be fully appreciated with a full understanding of Japanese culture and language. Japanese game shows are not that well known for guest starring high profile Hollywood players like Brad Pitt and Quentin Tarantino, but if you’ve been keeping up with your Japanese food shows, as I know you all have, you would have seen the inglourious duo in action in Japan.
On the show, Pitt elaborated on a comment made by Tarantino to MTV earlier this month where Tarantino stated that Pitt was the one pushing for another installment of Inglourious Basterds. Pitt stated on the show that he is “trying to get him [Tarantino] to make a prequel. Two of them.”
Pitt has enough Hollywood clout that he can probably push anything he wants into production, but contending with the eccentric personality of Tarantino will probably require him to sell it to QT first. Considering the success of Basterds, it’s pretty likely that at some point we will see a prequel or sequel, but the lackluster response to questioning and general attitude of indifference from Tarantino really only says one thing: It’s not on the books yet. It seems like Tarantino doesn’t want to rush into another installment, and while some people may be chomping at the bit for more, that is definitely going to help the project if it actually happens.
In light of financial problems industry wide, the standard attitude has been to fully exploit anything and everything that successfully returns a buck. Sequels are being made to films that never should have had one and sequels are being planned while the original film can still be found on the cutting room floor. I am glad to see Tarantino, who I would always expect this from, to make artistic decisions as opposed to business decisions.
And in other news, I can’t cussing wait for another Inglourious Basterds.
Do you think QT can pull off a prequel with the same success?
