Who else would pick up an ambitious foreign film like this? IFC has the market cornered on foreign, art cinema presumably only city folk want to see, a la last year’s Antichrist. Abbas Kiarostami’s Certified Copy (starring Juliette Binoche) was picked up by the company today, following yesterday’s acquistion of both Xavier Dolan’s Heartbeats and Antoine Blossier’s Prey. Let’s hope Cannes is as good to IFC as it has been for Kiarostami.
Copy takes place in Italy and concerns two people with similar pasts. Like most of Kiarostami’s work, the film is apparently anchored by its performances. With Binoche at the helm, that’s not surprising.
It seems as though this Cannes success has the wheels turning, as the writer/director has plans to make his next film already. The title of the film, for now, is Father and Son and will be set in Kiarostami’s native Iran, as all of his film’s (save Certified Copy) have been. No details on the film yet, but Hamed Behdad will star with cameras rolling in September. [The Playlist]
