A pair of Oscar winners have recently undergone new restorations ahead of theatrical releases. While one can’t get much better than The Criterion Collection edition of The Graduate, a new 50th anniversary 4K restoration will be coming to U.K. cinemas this month and a new trailer has landed for Mike Nichols‘ coming-of-age masterpiece led by Dustin Hoffman.
Following that, there’s a new trailer for Clint Eastwood‘s Best Picture-winning western Unforgiven, which turns 25 this summer. With the restoration premiering as part of the Cannes Classics line-up, it’ll fittingly come to France first. The new restoration of The Graduate hits U.K. theaters starting June 23 while Unforgiven returns to theaters in France two days prior. Stay tuned for updates on U.S. releases and check out both trailers below.
Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) has just finished college and is already lost in a sea of confusion as he wonders what to do with his life. He returns to his parents’ luxurious Beverly Hills home, where he idles away the summer floating in the pool and brooding in silence. He is rescued from the boredom when he is seduced into a clandestine affair with a middle-aged married friend of his parents, Mrs Robinson (Anne Bancroft). That liaison is soon complicated by Benjamin’s infatuation with her college-age daughter Elaine (Katharine Ross). Visually imaginative and impeccably acted, with a witty, endlessly quotable script by Calder Willingham and Buck Henry (based on the novel by Charles Webb), with a supporting cast that includes William Daniels, Murray Hamilton, Walter Brooke and Elizabeth Wilson, THE GRADUATE had the kind of cultural impact that comes along only once in a generation.
UNFORGIVEN is a modern classic that “summarizes everything I feel about the Western,” director/star Clint Eastwood told the Los Angeles Times. This American Film Institute Top 100 American Movies selection rode off with four 1992 Academy Awards®*, including Best Picture, Director, Supporting Actor (Gene Hackman) and Editing (Joel Cox). Eastwood and Morgan Freeman play retired outlaws who pick up their guns one last time to collect a bounty. Richard Harris is an ill-fated killer-for-hire. And Hackman is a lawman of sly charm… and chilling brutality. UNFORGIVEN is “a Western for the ages” (Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times).
