While we’re still waiting on concrete release news when it comes to Wong Kar-wai‘s The Grandmaster and Bong Joon-ho‘s Snowpiercer, The Weinstein Company has revealed some dates for a few of their sure-fire awards contenders. Although they didn’t bring home Best Picture like the last two years, they still grabbed top nominations for Silver Linings Playbook (and a few for The Master), with Jennifer Lawrence even taking home Best Actress, and now they will certainly try for awards glory again.
First up, they’ll show audiences Sundance’s top prize winner Fruitvale, which we called “a telling and touching movie, serving as a pertinent social and cultural reminder not to forget the life and times of Oscar Grant,” a man who was gunned down by a police officer on New Year’s Day 2009 in Los Angeles. Directed by Ryan Coogler, it will hit theaters on October 18th and we can expect a campaign surrounding Michael B. Jordan for Best Actor.
Then, less than a month later, we’re getting John Wells‘ The Company Men follow-up, August: Osage County. Set for a November 8th bow, the Tracy Letts adaptation has one of the finest casts of the year with Chris Cooper, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ewan McGregor, Abigail Breslin, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Juliette Lewis, Dermot Mulroney and Sam Shepard.
And lastly, we’ve got a pair of biopics that will likely try for top acting awards, as Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom will hit theaters on November 29th. Starring Idris Elba and Naomie Harris, we’d certainly love to see The Wire actor in a substantial role. Then, closing out the year on December 27th, we’ve got the Grace Kelly biopic Grace of Monaco, which will certainly see some action for Nicole Kidman, whose role will perhaps get a little more respect than that in Lee Daniels‘ The Paperboy last year. While I’d much rather see the two films mentioned at the top of the list, we’ll keep you updated on the rest throughout the year.
Which of the above films are you most interested in?
