It’s certainly a cause for celebration when you have two Spike Lee joints to look forward to. Although most of the media attention has been focused on Lee‘s upcoming remake of Park Chan-Wook‘s sensational Oldboy, avid fans of the director may have noticed he has another film in production. You would be forgiven for not knowing much about it because, well, not much is known about it.
In fact, all that is known is that it shall be titled Red Hook Summer and that the story centres on an Atlantan resident spends the summer in the Red Hook neighbourhood of Brooklyn, New York. Oh, and Spike Lee shall be reprising his as Mookie from his classic 80s film about racial tension, Do The Right Thing. Interested yet? I thought so.
Every little tidbit of information we get is priceless, as far as I’m concerned. So today’s announcement serves as a reminder that Red Hook Summer is a film that should be on everybody’s radar. Lee has announced, via twitter through The Playlist, that the film (which has already started shooting) shall be released, appropriately, next summer. Hopefully it will get a release at Cannes or Berlin beforehand.
Although the the announced release date is sooner than expected, I’m sure you’ll share my feelings of frustration that we have to wait almost a year to see the film. In the meantime, you can enjoy this picture the director posted of himself in front of a poster promoting the film:
Along with Spike Lee himself, Red Hook Summer also stars Clarke Peters, Samantha Ivers, Limary Agosto, Heather Simms and Kalon Jackson.
Are you a fan of Spike Lee? Are you looking forward to Red Hook Summer?
