A few months back, while he spoke on Blue Valentine and it’s controversial ratings and sex scenes and what have you, writer/director Derek Cianfrance found some time, here and there, to talk about his next potential project, a father-son crime drama called The Place Beyond The Pines, starring his Valentine star and resident doppelganger Ryan Gosling.
Sidney Kimmel Entertainment has stepped in to take said project off the ground, with Gosling on board and another role out to one Bradley Cooper. Gosling will play a pro motorcycle rider who robs banks to support his newborn son. When a young cop gets hot on his tail (potentially Cooper’s role), things get complicated. Or, in the words of the director himself:
It’s a very personal movie about a motorcycle stunt rider who finds out he’s a father. It’s a story that takes place over a few generations that takes place in Schenectady, New York. It’s kind of a crime movie that’s very much inspired by Jack London books.
Cianfrance co-wrote the script with Ben Coccio.
The film will sell at Cannes, where Drive, another Gosling man-who-robs-banks-to-support-himself film is in competition. Strange that the actor would make films which such similar out-lying plots so close to each other. That said, Nicolas Winding Refn and Cianfrance do make extremely different films, based on what we’ve seen before.
Principal photography for Pines will begin this summer. [Variety]
What do you think of Pines? Gosling and Cianfrance working together again?
