While it may not be in “glorious Ultra Panavision 70,” as its debut poster promises, the first trailer for Quentin Tarantino‘s The Hateful Eight has arrived. It’s a film I’m so excited for that, barring the chance a preview plays before something seen in theaters, I won’t even dare watch a second from until I’m sitting down for the full thing. Don’t let me stop you, of course.
Tarantino’s second western — perhaps the second of an eventual three, if the promise made at Comic-Con ends up panning out — is about as anticipated as they come, and signs (including the announcement that it’ll feature an original score from Ennio Morricone) point toward another smashing success. These things are, by now, expected from the greatest American director of his generation.
The Hateful Eight stars Samuel L. Jackson as Major Marquis Warren, Kurt Russell as John “The Hangman” Ruth, Jennifer Jason Leigh as Daisy Domergue, Walton Goggins as Chris Mannix, Demian Bichir as Bob, Tim Roth as Oswaldo Mobray, Michael Madsen as Joe Gage, Bruce Dern as General Sanford Smithers, and Channing Tatum in a small role.
Have a look below:
In THE HATEFUL EIGHT, set six or eight or twelve years after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape. The passengers, bounty hunter John Ruth (Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Leigh), race towards the town of Red Rock where Ruth, known in these parts as “The Hangman,” will bring Domergue to justice. Along the road, they encounter two strangers: Major Marquis Warren (Jackson), a black former union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix (Goggins), a southern renegade who claims to be the town’s new Sheriff. Losing their lead on the blizzard, Ruth, Domergue, Warren and Mannix seek refuge at Minnie’s Haberdashery, a stagecoach stopover on a mountain pass. When they arrive at Minnie’s, they are greeted not by the proprietor but by four unfamiliar faces. Bob (Bichir), who’s taking care of Minnie’s while she’s visiting her mother, is holed up with Oswaldo Mobray (Roth), the hangman of Red Rock, cow-puncher Joe Gage (Madsen), and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Dern). As the storm overtakes the mountainside stopover, our eight travelers come to learn they may not make it to Red Rock after all…
The Hateful Eight will open on December 25 in 70mm-equipped theaters; a wide release will follow on January 8, 2016.
