Nazis have reemerged as film’s favorite villains, and they won’t rest until they’ve invaded every genre. They appeared in Inglourious Basterds, Quentin Tarantino’s revisionist homage to war exploitation. They terrorized vacationers in Dead Snow, and hung out on the moon in Iron Sky. Now history’s most hated figures will become the bad guys once again for a weird twist on a horror classic.
The red band trailer for Tribeca selection Frankenstein’s Army hit the web last May, and now an official trailer has been released in all its campy, mind-blowing glory. Directed by Richard Raaphorst, the story follows a group of World War II Russian soldiers who stumble upon an army of “super-soldiers stitched together from the body parts of fallen comrades – a desperate Hitler’s last ghastly ploy to escape defeat.” That description barely covers all the craziness, which includes an especially nutty Dr. Frankenstein and zombies with knife hands. But don’t take it from me, watch the trailer and synopsis below.
Synopsis:
In the waning days of World War II, a battalion of Russian soldiers find themselves lost in enemy territory. Stumbling upon a village decimated by an unseen terror, they discover that a mad scientist (Hellboy’s Karel Roden) conducts experiments to fuse flesh and steel, creating an unstoppable army of undead soldiers. Leaderless and faced with dissention amongst their dwindling ranks, they must find the courage to face down an altogether new menace—or die trying.
Frankenstein’s Army opens in select theaters on July 26th.
Does Frankenstein’s Army look so crazy that it just might work?
