His well-received The Great Beauty about to hit theaters (followed, next year, by a Criterion release), Paolo Sorrentino would seem more than recovered from the disappointing non-business of his English-language debut, This Must Be the Place — perhaps to the best position of his career, period. Further evidence: Variety tell us the Italian helmer has secured Michael Caine for his next feature, In the Future, which is looking to roll cameras next year, hopefully hitting theaters (and likely Cannes) in 2015.
Sadly, nothing past notices of distributors and producers — Medusa and Indigo Films will handle those respective duties — has been made public, though with so little available for pontification, one has to wonder if Sorrentino‘s willing, given how the first outing fell together, to venture away from his home country and native tongue once more. (Which is not to suggest he considers it a failure, mind you, but surely the man is aware of its dark horse status in his canon.) More than anything, yours truly is merely glad that Caine, an actor who’s aged to only graceful extents, can nab another major part — better yet that it doesn’t require flying on a giant bee.
Are you hoping to learn more of Sorrentino and Caine’s collaboration? What do you make of this initial news?
