The popular, yet controversial play Spring Awakening is set to become a big-screen musical with The Playlist suggesting that it will be directed by McG (Charlie’s Angels, Terminator Salvation).
At the moment the film is being propositioned at the Cannes Marketplace, where producers and film companies try to get financing for their projects:
Among the many titles fighting for dollars is, apparently, an adaptation of the Tony-award winning musical “Spring Awakening” with none other than McG at the helm. (The Playlist)
Spring Awakening is a German play written in 1891, that was initially banned due to its frank portrayal of masturbation, bondage, suicide, child abuse, abortion, rape, and abortion. The film however, would follow an adaptation of the updated version which keeps the 19th-century setting, but uses a rock and roll score by Duncan Sheik. This musical version has had rave reviews and won both Tony and Grammy awards.
Depending on the type of audience the film adaptation is aiming to reach, Spring Awakening could have the traditional upbeat elements of a catchy teen flick or really challenge the medium with a serious and powerful rendition of teens experiencing the wonder of sexual awakening, the pain of lost innocence and the weight of social pressure.
