Before developing much early anticipation for the next Joel and Ethan Coen movie, keep in mind this following quote, provided by the former sibling after a Telluride screening of Inside Llewyn Davis: “You always hesitate to mention these things when you are in the middle of them because sometimes they just go in a drawer and never surface again and then people ask ‘what ever happened to that thing’ for the next 20 years.” So, should news of their next project arrive and, amazingly, the film is actually about an elderly carpenter? Don’t get up in arms because what you were told of didn’t come to fruition.
All this being said, yours truly is pleased, to a certain extent, when Ethan continued by saying that he and the elder Coen brother “are writing something right now where the main character is an opera singer.” That, sadly, was “it,” and their habits of staying relatively mum on a project until said project is ready for immediate viewing (the insanity!) should lead us to think little else will be known until the thing arrives — if this ever even happens, of course. As for speculation? No need to bother, except to say their jump from folk to opera — with the former following a not-so-dissimilar musical brethren, those country tunes of O Brother, Where Art Thou? — is curious; I’d love to know if they have that particular artistic medium on the brain, and for what reason. With the pair’s first film in three years only months away, however, we’ll wait. [FilmLinc]

For the time being, Joel and Ethan have folk on the mind: Inside Llewyn Davis will open in limited release on December 6, followed by a wide opening on December 20. Read our review from Cannes.
