While they aren’t directly connected, the filmmakers behind the upcoming standalone entry into the X-Men universe, The Wolverine, are attempting to get as far away from the 2009 misfire X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and we can’t blame them. Even as far back as when Darren Aronofsky was in the director’s seat, with James Mangold now taking over, countless interviews have reiterated Hugh Jackman and crew will be going down a very different path.

To hammer it home, Mangold has took to Twitter to provide a list of eleven influences for the film, including work from legendary directors such as Wong Kar-wai, Michael Powell, Emeric Pressburger, Roman Polanski and even Yasujirō Ozu. If the 3:10 to Yuma director can successfully even one of these examples, we’ll be pleased. Check out the images he provided below (via /Film), which come from the films Chungking Express, The Outlaw Josey Wales, The Samurai Trilogy, Floating Weeds, Black Narcissus, Happy Together, 13 Assassins, The French Connection, Chinatown, Shane and Daimajin.

Based on the celebrated comic book arc, this epic action-adventure takes Wolverine, the most iconic character of the X-Men universe, to modern day Japan. Out of his depth in an unknown world he faces his ultimate nemesis in a life-or-death battle that will leave him forever changed. Vulnerable for the first time and pushed to his physical and emotional limits, he confronts not only lethal samurai steel but also his inner struggle against his own immortality, emerging more powerful than we have ever seen him before.

The Wolverine opens on July 26th.
