In 2009, writer/director Paul Solet terrorized Sundance audiences with his feature film debut Grace, a twisted tale of motherly love and a cannibal baby. The horror flick riled audiences with its disturbing imagery and disconcerting themes, while it’s creator promoted the movie by carrying a ghoulish Grace doll around in a Baby Bjorn. And now its seems all of Solet’s strange antics have paid off as FilmNation Entertainment, who produced John Carpenter‘s The Ward, has hired him to helm their new horror-thriller The Faces.
While the script is currently being revised, the story will center on a couple of newlyweds who survive a harrowing kidnapping only to find themselves plagued by a disturbing series of events that lead them to discover a shady society who derives entertainment out of others’ terror.
FilmNation president of production Aaron Ryder informed Variety that the film is being crafted for a broader audience than typical genre fans, which makes Solet a curious choice. Grace was a ghastly and deeply bleak movie that by no means had “broad” appeal, leading me to believe Solet, another Eli Roth protégé, is one hell of a pitchman.
The Faces will begin casting this fall.
What did you think of Grace? Do you think Solet is a good fit for The Faces?
