I can already feel the angry mob beginning to assemble; Showblitz reports that the comedy team of Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer have signed on to write and direct The Starving Games, the latest in their long line of spoofs. As the title indicates, the movie will primarily use The Hunger Games as its fodder, but the brief news report also says that the duo will also throw spoofs on The Avengers, Harry Potter, Sherlock Holmes, and probably whatever else is popular at the time they sit down to write it (maybe they’ll even use the parody novel The Hunger Pains as another source). The international rights to The Starving Games will be sold during the Cannes Film Festival this month, which I probably find a lot more hilarious than you do.
I don’t need to tell you that The Starving Games will most likely be terrible; the proof lies in their track record, which is littered with movies that could double as torture at Guantanamo Bay if played back to back (a refresher: Date Movie, Epic Movie, Disaster Movie, Meet the Spartans, Vampires Suck). There’s absolutely no reason why this won’t follow suit, filled with the same “the pop culture reference is the joke” humor and cheap swipes at low-hanging fruit. And with each of their movies getting less and less successful at the box office, I don’t know why they keep getting churned out. But hey maybe that means their way past its relevancy Avatar spoof The Biggest Movie of All-Time 3D, which was announced last year, is not actually going to happen. Or, just to ruin your day, maybe we’ll get both in one year. All I know is this: I’ll be the masochist who sees The Starving Games but do yourself a favor and forget this is actually happening. For your sake.
