If all goes according to plan, we’ll be seeing not one, but two features from Take Shelter and Mud director Jeff Nichols next year. He’s currently shooting the drama Loving with Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga, and it seems primed for a fall 2016 release, but first out of the gate will be his long-awaited studio debut: the sci-fi thriller Midnight Special. Once set for a release this upcoming week, it was moved to March by Warner Bros., and today finally brings the first trailer.
“Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T., Starman, they were my inspirations — very propulsive journeys that work when you can’t predict what’s going to happen next,” Nichols recently said. “This is my sci-fi chase film.” Starring Michael Shannon, Kirsten Dunst, Edgerton, Sam Shepard, Adam Driver, and newcomer Jaeden Lieberher, it follows a father who sets to protect his uniquely gifted son while being hunted by a pair of dangerous groups. Check out the trailer below.
In the sci-fi thriller “Midnight Special,” writer/director Jeff Nichols proves again that he is one of the most compelling storytellers of our time, as a father (Michael Shannon) goes on the run to protect his young son, Alton (Jaeden Lieberher), and uncover the truth behind the boy’s special powers. What starts as a race from religious extremists and local law enforcement quickly escalates to a nationwide manhunt involving the highest levels of the Federal Government. Ultimately his father risks everything to protect Alton and help fulfill a destiny that could change the world forever in this genre–defying film as supernatural as it is intimately human.
Midnight Special arrives on March 18th, 2016.
