Many top film directors have moved over to the world of television, but one of the most successful, seamless transitions has been for Jane Campion, whose Top of the Lake a few years back was a gorgeously-shot, unsettlingly intense crime drama. She’s now back this year, returning to Cannes to premiere the second season of series, which once again stars Elisabeth Moss.
The first trailer has now arrived for Top of the Lake: China Girl, which also reveals Nicole Kidman (who is bringing three other projects to Cannes), and shows the story of the hunt for a killer when the body of a girl washes up on a Sydney beach. Check out the trailer below (via Indiewire) for the six-part series also starring Gwendoline Christie, David Dencik, Alice Englert and Ewen Leslie.
Detective Robin Griffin recently has returned to Sydney and is trying to rebuild her life. When the body of an Asian girl washes up on Bondi Beach, there appears little hope of finding the killer, until Griffin realizes “China Girl” didn’t die alone. The detective looks to the investigation to restore herself, but her problems are personal. Haunted by a daughter given up at birth, Griffin desperately wants to find her but dreads revealing the truth of her conception. But her search to discover “China Girl’s” identity will take her into the city’s darkest recesses and closer than she could have imagined to the secrets of her own heart.
Top of the Lake: China Girl premieres in September.
