One title curiously missing from the Toronto International Film Festival line-up (at least for now) was About Ray, previously known as Three Generations. Picked up for a hefty $6 million at Cannes earlier this year by The Weinstein Company, it’ll arrive on September 18th and today brings the first trailer.
Starring Elle Fanning, Naomi Watts, Susan Sarandon, Tate Donovan, Linda Emond, Sam Trammell, and Maria Dizzia, the transgender drama follows our title character going through a transition from female to male. Coming from Gaby Dellal (Angels Crest), the trailer sells a feel-good, awards season drama, but hopefully there’s a good deal of authenticity at the heart. Written by Nikole Beckwith (who directed the Sundance-turned-Lifetime drama Stockholm, Pennsylvania and Dellal, check out the trailer below via Vanity Fair.
ABOUT RAY tells the stirring and touching story of three generations of a family living under one roof in New York as they must deal with the life-changing transformation by one that ultimately affects them all. Ray (Elle Fanning) is a teenager who has come to the realization that she isn’t meant to be a girl and has decided to transition from female to male. His single mother, Maggie (Naomi Watts), must track down Ray’s biological father (Tate Donovan) to get his legal consent to allow Ray’s transition. Dolly (Susan Sarandon), Ray’s lesbian grandmother is having a hard time accepting that she now has a grandson. They must each confront their own identities and learn to embrace change and their strength as a family in order to ultimately find acceptance and understanding.
About Ray opens on September 18th.
