Doug Liman, eagerly looking to redeem himself after making one of the worst films of the decade, Jumper, is in talks to direct a remake of the 1966 Michael Caine crime-film Gambit. The catch? The script has been penned by Joel and Ethan Coen. You’re looking at a lot of pressure to not screw that up.
The plot of the original centered around :
A cat burglar who tries to rob a billionaire of his priceless statue and enlists the help of a waitress who is a dead ringer for the victim’s late wife. While the burglar has carefully planned the job in his head, the execution is complicated by his relationship with his pretty accomplice.
There’s noting in there that seems like it hasn’t been done before, but the Coen Brothers are of course amongst the finest modern filmmakers and even when they’re feeling rather remake friendly (just look at their next film, True Grit) you have to be excited. Liman‘s attempt at being a respectable filmmaker again, Fair Game, will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month and depending on the reaction it receives, this could be a done deal.
