When it comes to blockbuster tentpoles, especially ones involving mega monsters, one doesn’t exactly expect a promising cast to join the battle, but for director Gareth Edwards, he’s clearly taking an alternate route. After debuting his small independent project Monsters — showing he could craft convincing characters in a sci-fi world — the director is not settling for your usual studio ensemble for his Godzilla reboot.
After the casting of Aaron Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen and Bryan Cranston, we recently got word that none other than Juliette Binoche was in negotiations to star, and now other talented actor has thrown his name into the ring. Variety reports that David Strathairn has come aboard the Warner Bros and Legendary production, playing a military figure.
While he’s popped up in the Bourne series, Strathairn usually sticks with adult dramas, so his inclusion is also a bit of surprise, but that seems to be expected with this project. Having recently starred in Steven Spielberg‘s Lincoln, this is the actor’s only current rumored role and the studio better lock him, and the rest of the cast down, if they want this one to hit theaters in 14 short months.
Scripted by Max Borenstein, Frank Darabont and Dave Callaham, Godzilla will stomp into theaters on May 16th, 2014.
