Bill Murray recently revealed he’s not scared of actors with rough reputations, when he discussed Gene Hackman‘s notoriously bad behavior on the set of Wes Anderson’s Royal Tenenbaums at the 10th Anniversary screening at NYFF. It seems he’s set to prove this point by joining the cast of Roman Coppola’s A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III, which includes a number of noteworthy performers, from Murray’s Rushmore co-star Jason Schwartzmann, to Parks and Recreation’s Aubrey Plaza, and this year’s king of memes and celebrity meltdowns Charlie Sheen.
Details on the project are scarce at the moment, so there’s no word on what role Murray will play. Sheen, however, will star as Charles Swan, “a successful graphic designer whose fame, money and charm have made him irresistible to women. When his girlfriend breaks up with him, his life swirls into a downward spiral of doubt, confusion and reflection. Through delirious fantasies involving his many failed romances, he begins the hard road of self-evaluation to come to terms with life without her.” [Variety]
It seems a curious case of art imitating life, and while Coppola has only directed one previous film (the generally forgotten CQ), Murray’s involvement has me intrigued, as the actor is famously hard to reach, and highly selective on his projects. This doesn’t guarantee A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III will be a good movie, but it does suggest there’s something here worth Murray’s time and efforts, which is enough for me.
Also joining the cast is Patricia Arquette (Medium) and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who recently battled The Thing.
A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III is now in production, and will likely hit theaters in 2012.
