Despite being acquired nearly a year ago, we haven’t heard a peep about what The Weinstein Company is doing with Paolo Sorrentino‘s This Must Be the Place, the Sean Penn drama we weren’t fans of at Cannes (review here). Thankfully that’s not holding up the next project from the Italian director. We reported on his latest feature, The Great Beauty, earlier this summer but now more casting is coming together.
THR lets us know that Angelina Jolie has come aboard the film in a reportedly small role. She’ll join his Il Divo star, Toni Servillo, as well as Sabrina Ferilli and Carlo Verdone. Servillo takes a role of La Dolce Vita-esque journalist in the Rome-set film. Not much more is known, only that his Place co-writer, Umberto Contarello, has returned to Beauty, which is reported to focus on both “the city of Rome and its grotesque glamorous society and arts world underbelly.”
Perhaps could Jolie be playing a starlet like herself? We’ll have to wait and see, but unlike Rob Marshall, I’d love to see this director dive into a Frederico Fellini-esque project. As for Jolie, she is currently shooting Disney’s Sleeping Beauty prequel Maleficent and after that she’ll presumably head to the set of this film. A 2013 release date is expected, and perhaps a premiere at Cannes, a place that Sorrentino knows all too well.
Are you looking forward to Jolie in the cast?
