Following her incredible debut A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night and the divisive The Bad Batch, director Ana Lily Amirpour is embarking on shooting her third feature, the fantasy adventure Blood Moon, next month, starring Kate Hudson and the recently-attached Jeon Jong-seo (Burning), who will take the lead role. News has now already arrived for another film she’s developing, which will see her play in an entirely different arena.
Rocket Science has announced the Amirpour will direct a reboot of the 1993 Stallone actioner Cliffhanger. Her take on the story, which will be produced by contentious Fast & Furious producer Neal Moritz, will be a female-led version, though the first to be cast is Jason Momoa, who will make a cameo. Scripted by Sascha Penn (Creed II), sales will get underway in Cannes for the project.
“I am very excited to partner with Original Films and Rocket Science, who share my passion for the character-driven high-adrenalin survival movie; one of my favorite genres,” the director says. “We are setting out to create a thrill-ride on the mountain which taps into the primal side of an action movie, where you see what a person is capable of doing to survive in the most extreme situations, pushed to the limits. Add to that some high-stakes espionage and a badass female mountain climber as the lead and it becomes a truly epic reinvention of what made the original Cliffhanger movie so fun and so thrilling.”
