The Oscars highlight a handful of the best animated features and shorts each year, but the contributions to this specific form of filmmaking are often overlooked in the grand scheme of things. Thankfully there’s the Annie Awards, which not only recognizes animated films, but specific aspects of production from character design to editing to animation in a live-action film, and more.
Now in their 44th year, they’ve revealed their nominations with Disney’s Zootopia coming in at the top with 11 nominations while Laika’s Kubo and the Two Strings was close behind with 10. When it comes to smaller productions, the Studio Ghibli co-production The Red Turtle, as well as the recently released My Life as a Zucchini and Miss Hokusai were all recognized.
