Mary-Jane Watson might have disappeared from Spider-Man‘s life but a new dark-haired beauty has become entangled in Spidey’s web.

There’s a new rumor circling around that actress Zooey Deschanel is talking with director Marc Webb about joining the cast of Spider-Man as Elizabeth “Betty” Brant. As member of the Daily Bugle staff working under totalitarian editor-in-chief J. Jonah Jameson, Brant isn’t considered to be anything more than a supporting role in the journey of  Spider-Man. But Webb apparently has big plans for her:

“He wants a strong performer to carry the role and Zooey fits the bill perfectly,” an alleged insider told Showbiz Spy. “The role is hers if she wants it.”

Deschanel has worked with Webb in the past, starring in (500) Days of Summer as Summer, a modern young woman who embarks upon a fraught romance with a co-worker played by Joseph-Gordon Levitt. Gordon-Levitt was once considered a favorite amongst fans for the role of Peter Parker, though the part eventually went to Andrew Garfield.

Nothing has been confirmed about the expansion of the Betty Brant character or Webb’s interest in taking on Deschanel for the role, but her deadpan acting style could spice up the Spider-Man reboot.

Spider-Man 3D will hit theaters July 2012.
