Usually Sundays are dead days for movie news, but Deadline had to mess it all up; the website has broke the story that Warner Bros. have announced their new Superman for Zack Snyder’s upcoming reboot. The winner of that coveted role? Henry Cavill, a British actor who is probably best known for his role of Charles Brandon on Showtime’s historical soap opera The Tudors. Apparently what impressed the Warner Bros. executives the most was how “modern” he looks. Seriously, check out the quote one exec gave Deadline:
“He’s got an amazing quality. He doesn’t look too much like Reeve and Routh but he’s big and strong and he has a very modern feel to him,” a Warner Bros exec just told us. “We’re really going to try and make Superman as contemporary as possible.”
Having never seen The Tudors or remember Cavill from anything, I can’t comment on if I think that’s a good or bad choice. Judging from his picture though, I think he can pull it off; I just hope he’s got the chops (and the ability to be modern) to back it up.
Superman is being written by David S. Goyer (gulp) from a story by Goyer and Christopher Nolan (yay!), who is also producing and somewhat overseeing the project when not consumed with finishing up his Batman trilogy. If all goes well, Warner Bros. has positioned the flick to open December 2012. No word on if its going to be 3D yet, but I wouldn’t be shocked. Would you?
What do you think of Henry Cavill as the new Man of Steel? If you’ve seen his previous work, please let me know how good or bad he is. I’d like to know. And how do you think they will “modernize” the Superman story since they seem to really want to do that?
