As the relatively futile debate whether or not O.J.: Made in America is actually a film rages on, a new project will no doubt continue to add fuel to the discussion. For his recently announced directorial debut, Woody Harrelson will let you see the results live. In an “unprecedented live feature film event,” the actor — who has written the script — will not only direct, but star in Lost in London LIVE, which will be streamed in theaters across the country.
The film, which Harrelson loosely based on his own experience, follows the actor playing himself over one crazy night as he attempts to get back to his family. This journey is thwarted by run-ins with the law, friends, and royalty. Also appearing in the film are Owen Wilson and Willie Nelson. Producer of Terrence Malick’s recent films, as well as Silence, Ken Kao, is set to back the project alongside Harrelson.
When presented with this concept, one may recall the ongoing work of Francis Ford Coppola with Distant Vision, which parallels three generations of an Italian-American family with the rise of television, and will (at least initially) be presented as a work of “live cinema.” It looks like Harrelson got the jump on him, but it remains to be seen how cinematic his film will be, or if it’ll come across moreso as the filming of a staged play. It’s certainly nothing short of ambitious, especially for his first time behind the camera (which he will also be in front of the entire time, presumably).
