Jennifer Lawrence, the knock-out, Oscar-worthy star in the Sundance hit Winter’s Bone (my review here) has been cast as Mystique in First Class THR reports. Amber Heard was originally rumored, but I’m very glad they went with Lawrence. She is simply stunning in Debra Granik’s film.

Rumors were also flying high last week as Kevin Bacon was thrown around as a possible First Class villain. Now Variety confirms that the actor has officially signed a deal to star in Matthew Vaughn‘s upcoming superhero flick. Fox is not revealing the actual villain, but many have guessed it will be Mister Sinister.

They will be joined by James McAvoy as Professor Charles Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto, Alice Eve as Emma Frost, Nicholas Hoult as Dr. Henry ‘Hank’ McCoy/Beast and Caleb Landry Jones as Sean Cassidy/Banshee. Aaron Johnson for Scott Summers/Cyclops.

Kick-Ass writer Jane Goldsman has penned the script based on the idea by Bryan Singer: “young men discovering their powers for the first time, and meeting up with other mutants.”

X-Men: First Class hits theaters June 3, 2011.

Are you excited for a Bacon villain? Is this a good career choice for Lawrence?
