Oscar winners Kathy Bates and Whoopi Goldberg have signed on to costar in Nicole Kassell‘s (The Woodsman) romantic comedy Earthbound. The film stars Kate Hudson as a woman who falls in love with her doctor (Gael Garcia Bernal). Goldberg will be taking on the Morgan Freeman-esque role of God while Bates will be portraying Hudson’s mother. The film is currently shooting in New Orleans for the Film Department production company.Kassell has proven herself capable of drawing great performances from her actors in The Woodsman but this film doesn’t sound like a vehicle for quality performances. It would be great to see Bates and Goldberg return to form as both can be exceptional in comedies. Unfortunately, Bates hasn’t given a notable performance since About Schmidt in 2002 and Goldberg’s last film role was 2001’s Rat Race.
