I guess it’s not as surprising as it should be – just another sign of the times, which is not meant to be read negatively. German auteur Wim Wenders (Paris Texas, Wings of Desire, Don’t Come Knocking) has made a “27 minute 3D docudrama titled ‘Il Volo’, starring Ben Gazzara as a small town mayor with a big vision for social integration.” [Variety]
Two things jump out in that report: Wenders shooting 3D and Ben Gazzara starring in a film. The last time Gazzara starred in anything worth mentioning, it was a John Cassavetes’ film.
The filmmaker is finished with principal photography on the project, which was produced for a measly 500 grand. The short (which means “The Flight”) was shot in Southern Italy (Calabria), mostly with a crew working for nothing or scale. Those involved call it a “promotional project,” coming after Wender’s failed 3D homage to choreographer Pina Bausch, who died not long into the start of production.
It’s both confounding and exhilarating to see people like Wenders taken a step in this direction, especially for so little money. And Ben Gazzara in 3D? Color me happy!
What do you think of this project? Is this an important step for 3D?
