As a staunch Cloverfield lover/defender, the prospect of a sequel was always enticing. The speculation and rumors led me to believe we will likely never see another film though. J.J. Abrams is a perpetually busy man, and with director Matt Reeves taking on Let Me In and interested in a number of other projects, it just doesn’t seem like a real possibility. New updates from Total Film, who interviewed Reeves, both confirms and denies our suspicions.
Reeves insist “we will see” Cloverfield 2, but it will be awhile. Original writer Drew Goddard (whose directorial debut The Cabin In The Woods may see a release this year) is back for the sequel and J.J. Abrams “is very much involved.” But, as we feared before the group is “so busy that getting the right idea together has been taking a long time.”
There has been talk of heading to a completely different city for the same monster attack, or a true sequel taking place after the invasion. As what style it will take on, Reeves stated the difficult part is deciding if it will be “shot like the first,” but he fears they may not be able to “continue that idea successfully a second time.” Simply put, “the sequel can’t just be the same thing.”
It certainly seems like a ways off, but we should all be satisfied this summer when J.J. Abrams‘ Super 8 hits theaters.
