To no surprise, the biggest blockbuster of the summer, Michael Bay‘s Transformers: Dark of the Moon sat atop the July 4th holiday box office. Since it opened late Tuesday evening the sci-fi actioner has picked up $162 million, with a $97.4m for the 3-day weekend. This marks the highest Independence Day opening weekend, taking the spot previously held by Spider-Man 2.
The other wide release of the weekend, Universal’s Larry Crowne, opened to a disappointing $13m, confirming the star power of Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts can’t save a stinker. Fox’s Monte Carlo did even worse, taking $7.6m in its debut.
Green Lantern continues to drop like a rock, taking just $6.2m in its 3rd weekend and just crossing the $100m mark. Super 8, on the other hand, has continued to hold well in its 4th weekend, taking $7.5m. Cars 2, after a slew of negative reviews, dropped a heavy 62% in its 2nd weekend, taking in $25.1m.
