Thor stayed atop the box office this weekend, taking in $34.5m in its weekend with a 47.5% drop, but it was the Judd Apatow-produced, Paul Feig-directed Bridesmaids that was the true surprise. The fantastic comedy took in an impressive $24.4m for Kristen Wiig‘s first lead performance.

The other wide debut of the week, Scott Stewart’s Priest, grabbed $14.5m with a reported $60m budget. Fast Five continued its impressive run, taking in $19.5m with its third weekend. In family fare, Rio dropped a miniscule 5% taking in $8m in its fifth weekend.

In limited releases, Will Ferrell’s drama Everything Must Go took $740k in 218 theaters for a respectable $3,394 per-theater-average. The other notable indie release was Hesher, which grabbed $127k in 40 theaters for a $3,175 PTA.

Next week we only have one major release, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Expect it to easily take the #1 spot, while Woody Allen‘s Midnight in Paris succeeds in limited release.
