Facebook saga The Social Network opened this weekend to the tune of $23 million, easily handling the competition. While it was $12 million ahead of the second place flick, I have to admit I expected a better opening gate, particularly given the ubiquitous ad campaign. Look for this picture to get a second wind come award season.

In second position, The Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’hoole milked the rest of the animation fandom for an additional $10.8 million. It has now earned $30 million in its second week in the runner-up spot.

Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps dropped to third in its second week, posting a modest $10.1 million. At $35 million it is now halfway to covering its costs.

Mixed-reviewed horror flick Let Me In also debuted this weekend in 8th position with a disappointing $5.3 million.

Coming up next weekend comedy Life As We Know It takes on Disney sports biopic Secretariat. Though I am secretly rooting for the story of the greatest horse to ever race, I expect the former to take the weekend. It is opening in 600 more theaters and will likely garner a bigger crowd.
