Resident Evil: Afterlife enjoyed most of the business at the box office in its opening weekend, despite earning a modest total. It grossed an estimated $27.7 million in its debut, well ahead of Takers which earned only $6.1 million in its third week. Of course, it was the only major release this weekend.
In its second week The American fell from first to third, dropping 55% to $5.8 million. This gives it a lukewarm $26.7 million total. Machete managed to cover its costs in its second week as well, adding $4.2 million to its $20.8 million total.
Inception remains in the top 10 in its ninth week, with a $3 million weekend. It has now earned $282 million domestically.
