With Mother’s Day Weekend in full swing, Iron Man 2 enjoyed a lucrative debut Friday, en route to a stellar opening box office weekend. It had the 5th highest opening Friday ($52.2 million) and opening weekend ($133.6 million) of all time. Keep in mind that these are early estimates, and with Mother’s Day in full swing, we could see it shoot up even higher.
The A Nightmare on Elm Street remake placed this weekend, earning an additional $9.1 million, bringing its total to an impressive $48.5 million in two weeks.
Elsewhere, in fourth place, Date Night continued a noteworthy run, adding $5.3 million to its total ($80.8 million). I can’t say I really expected such a showing after 5 weeks for this one, but it continues to earn.
Also debuting, albeit modestly and only in 500 theaters, was the “awe”-worthy Babies. Given the nature of the weekend, I expected a better performance out of this one, as it only brought in an estimated $1.5 million.
