When the somewhat surprising news hits this summer that we would need to wait nearly a year to see the Warner Bros. 3D adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald‘s revered classic The Great Gatsby, the studio gave a generic summer 2013 date. But now, things have been firmed up as a concrete date has been set for Baz Luhrmann‘s film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton and Carey Mulligan.
The drama will now open on May 10th, 2013, which places it alongside the Universal comedy About Time, from Love Actually‘s Richard Curtis, as well as the next Tyler Perry film. As with any summer, it’s surrounded by competition, with Iron Man 3 opening the week before and Star Trek Into Darkness the following weekend, but this one is indeed different enough from your normal popcorn fare that perhaps WB made a smart move. And with this news, it also seems like Luhrmann is all set, financially speaking.
Do you think this new date is good for Gatsby?
