As Darren Aronofsky continues to put the finish touches on Noah ahead of a spring release and Ridley Scott kicks off production on his Moses tale Exodus, Hollywood is continuing its string of Biblical tentpoles with a new project. Revealed over at Screen Daily, LD Entertainment has announced plans for a feature that’s set during the New Testament story of Jesus’ resurrection.
Aptly titled Resurrection, the project will be directed by Kevin Reynolds, who has notably helmed Waterworld and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, but hasn’t directed a feature since 2006’s Tristan + Isolde. Described in the “tonal vein” of Gladiator, the film is actually a mystery that follows an agnostic Roman centurion that, under Pontius Pilot‘s orders, investigates the aforementioned resurrection and tracking down Jesus’ missing body.
While the producers have thrown out the Gladiator reference, don’t expect the same level of gritty violence, as this one is eyed to be a family feature. Reynolds’ name doesn’t hold as much interest as the Biblical epics from Aronofsky and Scott, but he still has a strong visual eye, so with this different angle on the story, hopefully it’s something to look forward to.
Scripted by Paul Aiello, Resurrection is aiming for a March 2015 release.
