After being involved in films that both made our top 20 films of last year, Stories We Tell director Sarah Polley sat down with Frances Ha star and co-writer Greta Gerwig to extensively discuss Noah Baumbach‘s feature. Available on The Criterion Collection release, but recently uploaded online, the 17-minute conversation makes for a great watch for fellow fans of the film.
Polley asks about the “penetrating loneliness” of the film, while Gerwig opens up about using the movement of a clown for inspiration when it came to her character, as well as David Thewlis in Naked (“it felt you got shocked when touched that movie”). The actress also discuss the use of her own parents in the film, incorporating actual ballet in the film, what she gets out of watching other people’s art, and much more. It’s a must-see as we await the release of Baumbach’s next film (one of our TIFF favorites), and one can check out the video below.
Frances Ha is now available on The Criterion Collection.
