As we await The Neon Demon — which has recently been described as Valley of The Dolls meets The Texas Chainsaw Massacre — those that are looking for another plunge into darkness from director Nicolas Winding Refn can get their fix today. He was recently given “carte blanche” by Hennessy, in a campaign for their Hennessy X.O. cognac, to create a short film detailing a how-to creation guide. “We were given the keys to the kingdom,” Refn says. “It was extremely brave of Hennessy to trust me with so much: For me this is a 90-second feature film.”
From a creature that looks to be from Ryan Gosling’s Lost River to an emblem-laden jacket to neon-lit frames, there’s a number of touchstones one would expect from the director, all with a score by frequent collaborator Cliff Martinez. “If you watch the film multiple times there’s a secret you might be able to see,” Refn says. “That’s the fun part, it will take a bit of time but you will find it.” Can you find it?
