First up, for those who have yet to see Snowpiercer, check it out now before going any further in this post as spoilers are abound. Once you’ve returned, you’re familiar with the literally lateral way Bong Joon-ho‘s plot moves forward in his post-apocalyptic thriller and today we have a new video essay that examines this aspect further, particularly how the director visually excels at conveying his character decisions.
Coming from Tony Zhou‘s Every Frame a Painting, this short but worthwhile video essay proposes how many films have a crucial point where “there’s no turning back” for their characters, from The Matrix to Eyes Wide Shut to a family-friendly cartoon, but this is mostly done through dialogue. When it comes to Snowpiercer, however, Bong Joon-ho is able to convey these moments with much more impact through visual composition. Check out the video essay below and if you’re looking for more, there’s another in-depth video essay here and our extensive discussion here.
Snowpiercer is now available on Blu-ray.
