The latest guild to deliver their 2014 nominations is Directors Guild of America and sadly, to no one’s surprise, Joel and Ethan Coen are once again left in the dust for their work on Inside Llewyn Davis. Making up the top five are Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity), Paul Greengrass (Captain Phillips), Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave), David O. Russell (American Hustle), and Martin Scorsese (The Wolf of Wall Street), signaling who will be up for the Academy Awards. Check back for the winner, who will be announced on January 25th.
Moving on to much more substantive matters, we’ve got a new extensive conversation with the Wolf director, courtesy of DP/30. While his latest Leonardo DiCaprio-led feature is certainly discussed, it goes much deeper into his career, as Scorsese talks about his relationship with critics (particularly the late Roger Ebert) and the financing of his films. Notably, he opens up about fronting $500,000 to get The Aviator completed, as well as the disparate planned budgets of Gangs of New York and The Departed. Watch the great discussion below.
