There’s no denying that Hollywood is a business and in order to make their system run, it behooves them to produce films that reach the largest audience possible. Danny Boyle seems to be fed up with the practice, as the director discussed the reasons why studios are getting rid of adult-themed movies while on the press tour for his latest work, Trance.
Boyle attributes this shift to a practice he refers to the “Pixarification” of movies, in which Hollywood’s desire to make family-friendly entertainment (i.e. follow the Pixar mold, although Boyle thinks their movies are brilliant) has caused a loss in maturity in films.
He continues that the “seriously sophisticated, complex storytelling” that gave him a desire to make films (such as the works of Nicolas Roeg or presumably his favorite film of all-time, Apocalypse Now), has shifted from the cinema to the television. The Slumdog Millionaire director even says that his latest film is an attempt to get back to this style and while some might disagree, we can see his points about the lack of impactful violence and other adult themes in today’s Hollywood slate.

Do you agree with Boyle’s theory? Would you like to see more adult films being made or is it a lost cause in today’s Hollywood landscape?
