While we’ve wrapped up 2015 with our 50 favorite films (and much more), the Oscars are still approaching, which means there is no shortage of conversations with those in contention for various awards. Today we have an extensive with some of the top directors of the year (and a few we wouldn’t necessarily pick): Quentin Tarantino (The Hateful Eight), Danny Boyle (Steve Jobs), Alejandro González Iñárritu (The Revenant), David O. Russell (Joy), Ridley Scott (The Martian), and Tom Hooper (The Danish Girl).
In the one-hour discussion they talk about their favorite films (both of the recent and classic variety), the television and film divide, whether or not sequels are wearing us out (posed by the director of the forthcoming Prometheus 2), going over-budget (mainly with The Revenant), Scott getting The Shining footage from Stanley Kubrick for Blade Runner, and much more.
“The only thing that I actually really regret about my behavior is — especially when the film is a long shoot — you get down, and you just get sick of it,” Tarantino says. “You’ve just f—in’ had it. And that day I feel sorry for myself, and I’m a grumpy a-hole and everyone’s [saying], ‘Oh, Quentin’s in a bad mood and stay away from him’ — I really regret that. And what usually snaps me out of it is, like, ‘Oh, poor you! You’re living your dream and it’s so difficult. Oh, everybody f—in’ cry for Quentin.'”
While it’s puzzling that Todd Haynes (Carol) and George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road), or even Spotlight‘s Tom McCarthy) aren’t included, one can check out the full talk below.
