Universal Pictures has bought the domestic distribution rights to Larry Crowne, the Playtone and Vendone Pictures title that will re-team Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts who last appeared together in Charlie Wilson’s War. Hanks will direct, something which he hasn’t done since That Thing You Do. He has also written the screenplay with Nia Vardalos, whom he last worked with on My Big Fat Greek Wedding as a Producer.
Deadline states that the film is scheduled to begin production April in Los Angeles. Hanks and Gary Goetzman will produce for Playtone, with Philippe Rousselet executive producing for Vendome Pictures.
The deal for domestic distribution rights was brokered by CAA, which represents Playtone. Summit International is handling sales of the foreign rights at the Berlin International Film Festival.
There are not very many details yet as to what Larry Crowne will be about, however Variety has noted that it will be “a middle-aged man being forced to find a new career.” It doesn’t sound at all original, however with Hanks’ comedic experience it will hopefully turn out better than something Vardalos can solely spin out post-Greek Wedding.
Do you think Larry Crowne has the possibility for success?
