As we expected when the first teaser popped up late last week, Nightcrawler, the directorial debut of Dan Gilroy (The Fall, The Bourne Legacy), was just announced to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Unlike the majority of features there, however, one will be able to see it soon after as Open Road will release the drama in October.

They’ve now debuted the first official trailer, which follows Jake Gyllenhaal playing Lou Bloom, a young man who dives head-first into the nocturnal world of L.A. freelance crime journalism. We’re quite impressed by this new preview, which looks to be amongst a strong streak of roles for Gyllenhaal, who stopped by last year’s TIFF with two quality Denis Villeneuve films. Also starring Rene Russo, Bill Paxton and Riz Ahmed, check it out below, along with the poster.

NIGHTCRAWLER is a pulse-pounding thriller set in the nocturnal underbelly of contemporary Los Angeles. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Lou Bloom, a driven young man desperate for work who discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism. Finding a group of freelance camera crews who film crashes, fires, murder and other mayhem, Lou muscles into the cut-throat, dangerous realm of nightcrawling — where each police siren wail equals a possible windfall and victims are converted into dollars and cents. Aided by Rene Russo as Nina, a veteran of the blood-sport that is local TV news, Lou thrives. In the breakneck, ceaseless search for footage, he becomes the star of his own story.

Nightcrawler will be released by Open Road on October 17th.
