While he’s played unnerving character parts in major studio projects like The Dark Knight and Prisoners, David Dastmalchian recently focused his efforts on a promising independent dramas. Having both written and starred in Animals, the film premiered last year at SXSW where it picked up the Special Jury Prize for Courage in Storytelling, and now it’ll arrive a year later.
Directed by Collin Schiffli, the film follows Dastmalchian as Jude, who is in a relationship with Bobbie (Kim Shaw) as they struggle with addiction in Chicago. The first trailer and poster have now arrived thanks to Oscilloscope Laboratories, which reveals what looks to be an artfully made drama. Ahead of a May release, check it out below.
ANIMALS follows Jude and Bobbie, a young couple living in their broken-down car parked alongside Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo, whose days are a continuous ritual of theft and scoring. When one of them undergoes a life-altering setback, each must confront the reality of their situation – forcing them to make a decision that will test their love and challenge their inextricable bond.
Animals opens on May 15th.
