Hipsters. Everybody hates them and nobody knows exactly what they are. Without a trailer, I’d have no idea what to expect from a film titled I AM NOT A HIPSTER. That movie, which was selected as part of Sundace’s new NEXT <=> program (yes, that’s the real logo), does have a trailer, and it looks like it’s about a hipster. Check it out below.

From the program notes:

I AM NOT A HIPSTER / U.S.A. (Director and screenwriter: Destin Daniel Cretton) — Set in the indie music and art scene, this is a character-driven story exploring themes of love, loss and what it means to be creative in the face of tragedy. Cast: Dominic Bogart, Alvaro Orlando, Brad William Henke, Tammy Minoff, Kandis Erickson, Lauren Coleman.

I may not be an expert on hipsters, but I know you’re not going to pull a hipster audience without hipster music. In what may prove to be a wise move, the film’s soundtrack is already free to stream on the I AM NOT A HIPSTER website.

The NEXT <=> Program (I know, it’s stupid) debuts this year at Sundance and was created to feature innovative low- or no-budget filmmaking. I AM NOT A HIPSTER looks like it meets at least one of those requirements. I guess we’ll see if it meets the other when it premieres at the festival.

Sundance 2012 kicks off on January 19th. Follow our complete coverage from the fest here.

What do you think of the album? Is it hipster music?
