After the trailer debut this morning of one independent drama coming from Sundance, tonight we have another. Coming-of-age films seem to one of the most common entries at the festival and while many fail, we were mostly fond of The First Time. Directed by Jon Kasdan, the film follows a pair of high school kids and the first weekend of a relationship. Back at Sundance, we praised the film’s honesty and how “they capture the brutally real, awkward sequence of events that show the loss of virginity as it is, not as it’s dreamed to be.”
While some of the cast come from Glee, Teen Wolf and various Nickelodeon shows, I’m most interested in the stars of two of the very best coming-of-age dramas of the last few years, but unfortunately they seem to be getting the short stick. Submarine‘s Craig Roberts looks to be the comedic sidekick, while Animal Kingdom star James Frecheville barely even shows up. Nonetheless, check it out below for the film also starring Dylan O’Brien, Britt Robertson, Maggie Elizabeth Jones, Lamarcus Tinker, Christine Taylor, Joshua Malina and Victoria Justice.
Synopsis:
Dave (O’Brien) is a high school senior who spends most of his time pining away over a girl he can’t have. Aubrey (Robertson), a junior with artistic aspirations, has a hot boyfriend who doesn’t quite understand her or seem to care. Dave and Aubrey meet one night at a party. A casual conversation sparks an instant connection, and, over the course of a weekend, things turn magical, romantic, complicated and funny as Aubrey and Dave discover what it’s like to fall in love for the first time. Director/screenwriter Jonathan Kasdan skillfully captures a moment of adolescence that rings resolutely true.
The First Time arrives on October 19th.
