With Colin Farrell confirmed to be stepping into Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s shoes and Sony Pictures setting a release date, it seems we can’t ignore Len Wiseman‘s Total Recall remake. If you’ve seen Paul Verhoeven‘s 1990 original, then you know there are two major female roles, Lori (played by Sharon Stone in the original) and Melina (Rachel Ticotin). Deadline has reported the shortlist for both.

Kate Bosworth (Superman Returns, The Warrior’s Way) and Diane Kruger (Inglorious Basterds, Unknown) have begun reading for the Lori role yesterday. Eva Mendes (The Other Guys, Hitch), Paula Patton (Precious, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol), Jessica Biel (The A-Team, Valentine’s Day) are reading for the Melina role. Also in contention for a role is Eva Green (Casino Royale, Cracks).

Mark Bomback, James Vanderbilt, and Kurt Wimmer are credited with the screenplay that doesn’t even take place on Mars, like the original. Producer Neil Moritz explained more details a few months back. Vanderbilt (Zodiac and the upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man) is talented, but it is difficult to look forward to a film Wimmer had a hand in. Salt and Law Abiding Citizen were two of the worst films I’ve seen the last few years, so I can only hope he had a minuscule part in crafting the script. As for female leads, I wish  Kruger would choose better projects than this, but I wouldn’t mind seeing her and Mendes take the respective roles.

Total Recall will hit theaters August 3rd, 2012.

Do you have any hope for this remake? Who should get the female lead roles?
